Gillian Provan, STV, Glasgow:

“Andy Alston’s contributions have become an integral part of the STV Hamilton website. Shortly after the launch of the website in November 2010, Andy was in touch keen to contribute to the sporting output of the site.

“As the community editor of several sites in Lanarkshire I was delighted to hear from Andy for the last year and a half he has emailed articles and contributed articles via the website, and spent time on work experience at STV.

“On top of writing regular in depth and comprehensive match preview and match reports for Hamilton Academical FC, Andy has contributed several opinion pieces ranging from the team’s drop into the First Division to the signings of new players.

“Andy’s work is always of a high-standard and very rarely needs to be edited. He is an enthusiastic and reliable individual who has also volunteered his time encouraging others to write and contribute to the websites at STV Local’s social media clinic, where his help was invaluable.

“A highly motivated journalist Andy spent a period of time over January and February assisting the STV Local team with research on Airdrie and Motherwell football teams and he showed his versatility working on what’s on entertainment guides for the websites in Lanarkshire.

“Andy’s work has enhanced STV Hamilton, in particularly with his contributions when the Hamilton side moved out of the top flight, giving supporters a reason to look on the website.”

David McKinney, Head of Media and Drama at City of Glasgow College:

“Andy Alston successfully completed an HND qualification at the City of Glasgow College in June 2012. In doing so, he excelled in every area of Journalism, and impressed with his drive determination and focus.

“He was the Sports Editor of our college student magazine, City Word, and was also editor for his class magazine. In addition, he secured himself work with STV Local, providing features and interviewing as well as sub editing duties.

“Andy’s hard work and skills were recognised at the end of his second year when he was presented with the Student of the Year award.

“A highly skilled and motivated individual, I have every confidence that he will make a name for himself in the world of Journalism.”
